Even in Toughest Times, Mom Remains Young Man’s “Superhero”

“She’s like MacGyver. She figures out every way, anything to do to make sure that we’re OK with any situation, even when we were homeless,” says 18-year-old Kentrall Kelly as he describes his mother, Tina Lewis. Tina has dealt with many barriers in her life, including domestic violence, being drawn into criminal activity by her ex-husband, and an unjustified eviction that she can’t get off her record; but she’s fought hard for a better life for her son. “He’s what’s kept me focused all this time,” she says.

This story was recorded in July 2014 in Lynnwood, Wash., at YWCA Family Village.
